Beyond the Scorecard: Exploring How LEED for Communities Can Guide Sustainable Urban Design

Turning urban design decisions into measurable sustainability outcomes

USGBC’s community-scale rating systems have traditionally emphasized commitments, policies, and programmatic strategies. While these indicators are essential, they may not fully capture how sustainability is delivered through the physical design of streets, blocks, buildings, public spaces, and infrastructure.

This interactive session will explore how the LEED for Communities rating system can create a clearer, more actionable connection between urban design decisions and sustainability outcomes.

Participants will work together to:

  • Identify the urban design elements that most strongly influence sustainability outcomes in mixed-use developments, including connectivity, public realm quality, human comfort, walkability, mobility, ecological performance, and resilience.
  • Translate these elements into measurable criteria that are credible, equitable, and practical across different contexts and geographies.
  • Explore how design-focused metrics can complement existing performance and policy measures while supporting better decisions earlier in the design process.
  • Apply and refine draft criteria through a real-world project exercise, providing feedback on usability, clarity, measurement, and potential unintended consequences.

Participants will gain:

  • A clearer understanding of the direction of LEED for Communities.
  • Practical language for discussing sustainable urban design in measurable terms.
  • Firsthand experience applying proposed criteria to a real-world project.
  • An opportunity to help shape candidate metrics and inform the rating system update.

WHY ATTEND?

Connect Design to Outcomes

Explore how decisions about connectivity, walkability, mobility, and public realm quality can translate into measurable sustainability outcomes.

Test the Draft Criteria

Apply proposed evaluation criteria to a real-world mixed-use development and identify what works, what is unclear, and what needs refinement.

Help Shape LEED for Communities

Contribute practical insight to design-focused metrics that can complement LEED’s existing policy and performance measures.

AGENDA AT A GLANCE
  • 3:15 - 3:25 PM
    Introduction
  • 3:25 - 3:40 PM
Opening Overview: LEED for Communities Snapshot
Receive an introduction to the current LEED for Communities rating system, including adoption trends, project types, lessons learned, and the rationale for a more design-forward approach. Participants will also preview the draft rating system framework and sample credits.
  • 3:40 - 4:30 PM
Facilitated Roundtables: Applying Design Criteria to a Sample Mixed-Use Project
Working in facilitated roundtables, participants will apply the proposed criteria to a sample mixed-use development project. Each table will identify what is easy to evaluate, what remains ambiguous, and what additional information may be needed.
  • 4:30 - 4:50 PM
    Report-Out & Cross-Table Synthesis
Tables will share key observations, compare findings, and participate in a facilitated discussion to identify the most promising metrics and opportunities for refinement.
  • 4:50 PM - 5:00 PM
    Closing & Next Steps
Participants will discuss the potential integration of a design tool, pricing options, customer value, and other considerations that may influence the future product experience.
