Although commercial green building certifications have gained meaningful traction in the U.S., residential green programs have lagged considerably. Yet, residential buildings account for greater energy use and carbon emissions than commercial buildings. It’s time to capture this lost opportunity and USGBC has begun that process. Internal and external green program experts have been engaged with one-on-one interviews and two workshops to establish critical underpinnings framing the challenges and opportunities scaling green residential buildings. This feedback has been rigorously curated relative to proven fundamentals for leading change derived from extensive experience developing and implementing national high-performance home certification programs and research on this topic. 

A draft set of recommendations forming a comprehensive strategy for scaling USGBC residential has now been developed. The purpose of this session is two-fold. First, we will share the process, fundamentals of scaling, and resulting four key strategic recommendations to ‘cross the chasm’ from early adopter to mainstream residential building stakeholders. Second, facilitated discussion will be used to get feedback for further refining this roadmap.
